These items came to the Library of Virginia in shipments of court papers from previous hit Nottoway  next hit previous hit County  next hit.

Historical Information

previous hit Nottoway  next hit previous hit County  next hit was named for the Nadowa Indian tribe. The word nadowa, anglicized to previous hit nottoway  next hit, means snake, or enemy. It was formed from Amelia previous hit County  next hit in 1788.

Many records were destroyed or heavily mutilated in 1865 by Union troops during the Civil War. A few volumes that record deeds, court orders, and wills exist.

Before the Bird Road Act of 1932, previous hit counties  next hit were responsible for the control, construction, alteration, and maintenance of the roads and bridges in their locale. People living along sections of the road were responsible for its maintenance. An individual Surveyor of the Road was appointed from among the residents in each section of the road, to oversee the work for that section of the road.
